Hardware Your Business Cannot Do Without

While buying a computer, look at:
  • Processor Speed – Though you may pick up a model that has the latest processor, chances are within a month there will be a new one with a much faster processor in the market. Go for a reasonably fast processor (lately all models come with a dual processor) but make sure you have enough memory.

  • RAM – The more the RAM, the faster your computer will be able to process information and the faster you will get your work done. Make sure your computer has sufficiently high RAM and if you are going to be handling heavy graphics work, you might want to upgrade to more.

  • Hard Drive – The hard drive is where all your work will be stored and it is best to go in for a model that has a fairly large hard drive. Of course, nowadays most computers easily come with 320 GB to 500 GB hard drives.

  • DVD±RW drive - Although you might think that a DVD±RW drive is not a crucial part of the computer, you will see that it helps in performing many essential business tasks such as installation of software, backup and storage as well as other data communications functions.

You should take steps to ensure that your computer equipment is well protected against any kind of electrical problems that can not only interrupt your work or result in loss of valuable data but also result in substantial repair bills. Make sure that your equipment is connected through a surge suppressor and that your home office has three-prong outlets, all properly grounded.

You could also consider having an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This will avoid sensitive devices from shutting down immediately in the case of blackouts.

Fax Machine

A fax machine is still considered essential for the smooth functioning of even an online business and is part of many home offices. If buying a full-fledged fax instrument is beyond your budget, you could consider installing software that will help your computer to send and receive faxes.

Scanner and Digital Camera

Digital Cameras and Scanners are helpful tools that are used to capture photographic images.

Photographs and digital images are a very important part of any business website. You will need them to add a dash of color to your business website and make it more inviting. You will also need them to illustrate your product or service in a catalog. You can also make very effective use of them in before-and-after samples.

Provider of Telecom Services

The biggest monthly expense you are likely to encounter will be the telephone bills and the Internet connection bills.

The telephone bills will include your local calls, long distance calls and your cell phone services. In addition, you may have to pay for the DSL service being provided to you over the phone lines.

It is therefore very important that you choose your telephone company after some research. Understand what your requirements will be – whether you are likely to make more local calls or more long distance calls or use the Internet the most – and then see which provider is likely to give you a good deal on the complete package.
