Affiliate programs, also known as reseller programs, are also popular.
As part of this type program, website owners will agree to display advertisements of your product or service – they will be known as your business affiliates – on their websites.
For every purchase made by a visitor who has come through one of your affiliates, a certain percentage or portion of the sales – called commission – is paid out to the affiliate.
All the affiliate has to do is display the advertisement, while you will be taking care of all the tracking and billing.
For your part, you need to pay your affiliate for sales that actually happen. This way both of you benefit.
Two ways in which you can run your own affiliate program:
- You could set up the program by yourself using many free or cheap online services like Clickbank.com.
- You could use the help of a more costly service bureau like Commission Junction which will help you with the placement of your advertisements, of the actual tracking of sales, payments, reporting, etc.
Here are some tips that you should keep in mind in order to run and manage a successful affiliate program:
- Your affiliates should be free to join and quit anytime they like.
- They should be given access to tools that allow them to check the sales status and the amount of commission they have earned without having to contact you every time.
- You should provide your business affiliates enough promotional material to sell your products effectively. For example, along with just a banner, you might want to send them sales letters, positive feedback and endorsement letters, articles and so on.
- You should ideally provide them with 24/7 technical support.
- Keep the commission levels at a rate that will allow them to earn enough and motivate them to promote your product more enthusiastically.
